We were thrilled by the overwhelming turnout of visitors for Butterfly Education and Awareness Day (BEAD), held on Saturday, June 7, as families and nature lovers gathered to celebrate the occasion. BEAD is an annual international event designed to help educate the public about the importance of butterflies in the pollination process and the role they play in our ecosystems. International Museum Day was also celebrated as part of the activities which was previously postponed due to the inclement weather.

Visitors enjoyed guided tours of our treasured Barcant Butterfly Collection, home to over 5,000 butterfly specimens, the largest of its kind in the Caribbean. They also explored the historic Angostura Museum to learn more about the Company’s over 200-year history.

While enjoying our signature cocktail, the Queen’s Park Swizzle or our carbonated soft drink, Angostura® Chill, guests of all ages took part in a range of fun, butterfly-themed activities, including canvas painting, face painting, a DIY craft station, and games such as cornhole and ladder bolas creating a lively, family-friendly atmosphere.

The event also had a strong educational component where butterfly enthusiasts from The UWI Zoology Museum shared the importance of preserving natural history collections, highlighting the scientific and cultural value of Angostura’s butterfly legacy. Visitors also learned about current conservation initiatives from the Friends of the Botanical Gardens through their “Garden with Wings” project, which promotes the preservation and growth of local butterfly species. The Butterflies of Trinidad and Tobago Group offered practical tips on creating home pollinator gardens.

To inspire guests to begin their eco-journey, Angostura® provided flowering plants and seedlings, encouraging them to transform their gardens into welcoming habitats for butterflies. Angostura® remains committed to environmental conservation as a core part of its philanthropic focus. Through educational initiatives like BEAD, we aim to inspire communities, raise awareness, and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.
